Convenience Comes at a Cost [Part 1 in D.I.Y. Series]

It's said that "cleanliness is next to godliness" and in my mind this translates to: impossible for any of us mere mortals to achieve.  Perhaps of more relevance to our 21st Century lives however is the fact it’s an exhausting, expensive and never-ending process.  Further, when we consider the number of requisite products to be purchased it becomes extremely time-consuming to select each item from everything on offer, made yet even harder to navigate because we all have different micro needs.  As a result, and completely understandably, we often purchase whatever is made readily available to us out of sheer convenience

Lost in a Loveless Social Media Void

It is hard not to feel extremely bitter and frustrated with capitalism, cheap and lazy "creatives" and the continual devaluation of my work by those who don't give a damn about where something originated; and whilst I am trying to run a business and therefore don't want to lose out on potential revenue* I feel most angry and upset about the fact someone else is always taking credit for my work and preventing me from gaining the exposure and recognition I deserve.

Supporting Small.

Today's #smallbusinesssaturday, the one day of the year we're encouraged to shop small. The large companies and corporations have 364 days in the year to reign you in, along with huge revenues, and we get today. The same large companies and corporations who brought Black Friday to the masses, who turn over profits in excess of millions, if not billions, who steal the ideas of small businesses and sell them for cheaper than we ever could courtesy of economies of scale, and so on... Thanks capitalism!

DIY Punk Witchery #4: New Moon Fluidity

The final element in the lunar cycle - or the first, depending on which way you look at it - is the one that I personally crave the most: water.

Of course water isn't something only I thirst for as it is vital to all life. Approximately 80% of our human bodies are made up of water, so any deficit will lead us racing to the shower or tap. It nourishes the planet, offers refreshment to all it's human and non-human inhabitants, and is essential for crop and plant growth, thus the provision of all food.

DIY Punk Witchery #3: Creating an Earth Talisman

When I think about earth the first thing that springs to mind is literal earth: cold, dark and often damp, gritty, heavy soil.  I think about something that fills our gardens and plant pots, extends for miles upon miles in forests, and that which unfortunately houses the world's waste. It often seems unappealing, whether because I have anxiety about it being traipsed through my house and dirtying the hardwood flooring, the aforementioned landfill sites or because in itself it isn't as dynamic and exciting as the other elements which all feel far more potent in engulfing and empowering us.

Bullshit Be Gone

Bullshit Be Gone

I know I am not alone here in saying that fall is my absolute FAVOURITE season.  Hands down.  No competition.  But my love for it goes beyond the aesthetic and weather.

Despite leaving education 13 years ago I have never been able to shake the academic year calendar - perhaps I'm just not meant to - and as a result fall is my 'New Year'.  I feel the most alive, energetic and optimistic around this time; and consequently it has (at least post-education) typically been the time of year I make the most life changes.  I have ended relationships, left jobs, and moved city/country/continent.  I haven't always started something new, but I have always shed something old.  For as long as I can remember it has been my season to purge.

DIY Punk Witchery #1: Creating an Air Talisman

When I talk about being a D.I.Y punk witch I have to laugh.  To me the very nature of witchcraft is D.I.Y, so it doesn't necessarily make sense to stress this aspect; but I do know there are some for whom it is far more rigid in structure or who belong to a hegemonic religious faction that is led by someone other than themselves.  As for the punk aspect, I could use the words eclectic and secular, however my general penchant for all things punk means that my lifestyle is clearly reflected in my craft.
